Description:

After filling 2015 with more gloom than it could possibly handle, Hey Colossus attempted to take a break which really didn’t last long cuz here they are, loud and proud, with another full length record to cut you in half with on Rocket Recordings.

Ah, yeah, I remember this, the impenetrable sludge of the Hey Colossus sound. There’s something in here for all types of downbeat freak, from the krauty fuzz repetitions of the Derren Brown-worshipping ‘Back in the Room’ to the deep emotional chime of ‘Calenture Boy’, this record will surely unite fans of heavier psych, stoner doom and post-rock. There are some dodgy vocal moves at times though, particularly on that first track and ‘Experts Toll’, though on the cleaner escapades they feel much more controlled and less, well, hilarious. See ‘Englishman’ for more. ‘Potions’ is lovely though.

It’s really strange that I saw this band support none other than Karen Gwyer not far from NR home city Leeds. The technoheads’ rock band? They certainly manage to hit as hard as a 140bpm kick pattern in places here, and even provide their own chillout room soundtrack for a couple too, so get on down to the rock rave.

Description:

A major influence on British guitar heroes of the ’70s such as Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, Hank Marvin played lead guitar for the Shadows, one of the U.K.’s top instrumental outfits and backing band for Cliff Richard on most of his hits. Born Brian Robson Rankin on October 28, 1941, Marvin grew up in Newcastle learning guitar, banjo, and piano. He played in various skiffle groups around the area, and met up with rhythm guitarist Bruce Welch. After moving to London in 1958, the two were recruited to serve in Cliff Richard’s backing band, the Drifters, with Ian Samwell and Terry Smart. Richard’s first single, “Move It,” hit number two on the British charts, and two other singles — “Living Doll” and “Travellin’ Light” — hit number one the following year. Samwell and Smart left the band — now called the Shadows, to avoid confusion with the American vocal group — and were replaced by bassist Jet Harris and drummer Tony Meehan.

The Shadows recorded several sides as an instrumental act in late 1959; one called “Apache” hit number one in the British charts. From 1960-1963, the band racked up four number ones and seven Top Ten hits before disbanding in 1968. Marvin, while continuing to appear and record with Cliff Richard, began a solo career with a self-titled album in 1969; it reached number 14 in the album charts. In the early ’70s, he reunited with Welch and John Farrar as Marvin, Welch and Farrar. The trio recorded both an eponymous LP and Second Opinion, and then Marvin and Farrar recorded an additional album as a duo. Marvin moved to Australia and became a Jehovah’s Witness in 1973, but later joined a re-formed Shadows. The group resumed recording, and hit the Top Ten in 1978-1979 with “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” and “Theme from ‘The Deerhunter’.”

Hank Marvin’s only chart success as a solo act was 1982’s Words and Music, which featured the U.K. hit “Don’t Talk.” He recorded All Alone with Friends in 1983, and then re-appeared in the ’90s with four albums — Into the Light, Heartbeat, Hank Plays Cliff, and Hank Plays Holly. Continuing to perform on the live circuit and release throughout the 2000s — including the U.K. Top Ten albums Guitar Player and Guitar Man — Marvin also delivered guest spots for the likes of Jason Donovan and Richard Hawley. 2014 saw Marvin branching into jazz territory with the release of Django’s Castle, on which he was joined by rhythm guitarist Gary Taylor and accordionist Nunzio Mondia. Returning in 2017 with Without a Word, the album featured covers of songs by some of Marvin’s favorite artists, including the Beatles and Elvis. ~ John Bush

‘I wanted to make a record about the things in my life I never wanted to talk about. It’s a record about self-exploration, about learning to love yourself and opening yourself up to love others, about choosing the kind of person you want to be, about confronting death and appreciating life. Really it’s about trying to take control from the perspective of someone who has come very close on several occasions to losing ALL control.’ – Benjamin Booker

Description:

With their angst-filled hybrid of Van Morrison, the Band, and R.E.M., Counting Crows became an overnight sensation in 1994. Only a year earlier, the band was a group of unknown musicians, filling in for the absent Van Morrison at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony; they were introduced by an enthusiastic Robbie Robertson. Early in 1993, the band recorded its debut album, August and Everything After, with T-Bone Burnett. Released in the fall, it was a dark and somber record, driven by the morose lyrics and expressive vocals of Adam Duritz. The only uptempo song, “Mr. Jones,” became their ticket to stardom, and Counting Crows enjoyed a significant amount of success throughout the ’90s and beyond.
Recovering the Satellites What made Counting Crows unique was how they were able to balance Duritz’s tortured lyrics with the sound of the late ’60s and early ’70s; it made them one of the few alternative bands to appeal to listeners who thought that rock & roll died in 1972. Recovering the Satellites followed in 1996, and “A Long December” was a Top Ten hit on both the Modern Rock and Adult Top 40 charts. The band issued the two-disc Across a Wire: Live in New York in 1998, and the following year saw the release of Counting Crows’ third studio album, This Desert Life. In the midst of recording and collaborating with Ryan Adams on his sophomore album, Gold, Duritz joined his band in the studio as well. The fruit of those sessions was the group’s Steve Lillywhite-produced fourth album, Hard Candy.
Films About Ghosts: The Best Of… The next year saw the release of the best-of Films About Ghosts, and in 2004 Counting Crows reminded fans of their ability to write a hit single with “Accidentally in Love,” which appeared on the Shrek 2 soundtrack. Two years later, New Amsterdam: Live at Heineken Music Hall, recorded from a show on February 6, 2003, was made available to the public. In 2008 the band issued Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings, a concept record divided into two halves: the more rowdy, upbeat rock of Saturday night soundtracks and the mellow alt-country side of Sunday morning hangovers.
August and Everything After: Live at Town Hall In 2009 the band parted ways with its longtime major-label home Geffen Records, but continued to tour and write new material as feverishly as ever. Duritz struggled with mental problems and prescription drug addiction following the split with Geffen, working on solo material that he released in part online. August and Everything After: Live at Town Hall, the band’s third official live album, was released in 2011. To tide fans over until the release of an album of new material, the band offered up a collection of cover songs entitled Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation) in 2012 and yet another live album, Echoes of the Outlaw Roadshow, the following year. While touring in 2013 the group started to write material for what would become its seventh album. Recorded at the end of 2013 with producer Brian Deck, Somewhere Under Wonderland saw release in September 2014.

The album is Auerbach’s much anticipated follow-up to 2009’s Keep It Hid and is a love letter to Nashville. As such, he recruited some of Nashville’s most respected players to write and record his latest, including John Prine, Duane Eddy, Jerry Douglas, Pat McLaughlin and Bobby Wood and Gene Chrisman of the Memphis Boys. Auerbach said about working with his musical heroes: “Living in Nashville has definitely changed the way I think about music and the way that I record it. I didn’t have all of these resources before. I am working with some of thegreatest musicians that ever lived.”

NPR Music premiered sthe video for Waiting On A Song’s first single, “Shine on Me”. Watch the video for “Shine on Me” here: http://bit.ly/2ol70Jc

Dan Auerbach moved to Nashville from his native Akron, Ohio in 2010 and with this release, his first solo album in eight years, it is clear that he has made Music City his home. During the summer of 2016, taking a break from the non-stop touring he’d donewith The Black Keys and the Arcs, he finally got acquainted with the city he loves so much, as well as the world-class musicians who live there, and subsequently collaborated with some of Nashville’s heavyweights. Of the process he reveals, “They’d come over, and we’d be in a little room in my house with the door closed, and we’d just write. Monday through Wednesday we’d write, and then Thursday through Sunday we’d record, every week.” Auerbach wrote seven songs withJohn Prine, one of which is the title track of the album. Mark Knopfler’s immediately identifiable guitar elevates “Shine on Me” into an anthem. Iconic guitarist Duane Eddy is featured on”Livin’in Sin” and the cinematic “King of a One Horse Town.”

Waiting On A Song is the debut release, and marks thelaunch of Easy Eye Sound, Dan Auerbach’s new record label which will feature soon-to-be-announced releases from other artists and is distributed by Auerbach’s longtime label Nonesuch Records. The new label is built equally around Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, where The Black Keys recorded their last two albums, as well as the collection of famous session musicians that have come to call the studio home. Auerbach says, “Sometimes I feel Icreated my own Field of Dreams. I built the studio because I knewsomething was going to happen. I built it to accommodate live musicians playing, and then all ofa sudden the best musicians in Nashville show up, and it’s happening.”

Capture is a more complete and substantial gritty take on the great American songbook, with its arms and heart left open to all.
