Description:

EX EYE was conceived during the sessions for Colin Stetson’s landmark 2016 album, Sorrow: A Reimagining of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony. Liturgy drummer Greg Fox and keyboardist Shahzad Ismaily (Ceramic Dog, Secret Chiefs 3) both played on that record, and the trio undertook discussions of forming a band that engaged black and post-metal aesthetics. Stetson reached out to his longtime friend, guitarist Toby Summerfield, and the quartet commenced playing festivals. Relapse Records heard and signed them almost on the spot. This debut four-track album embraces and challenges accepted notions about post-metal, black metal, and doom metal.

Description:

What we’ve seen so far from The Interbeing has been impressive, even though the Danish tech-industrialists have been painfully slow to release their second album. Their 2011 debut, Edge Of The Obscure, melded Fear Factory-esque steel riffery with sinister djent ambience to nightmarish effect. Six years on, the band have finally arrived at Among The Amorphous, an epic, sci-fi, dystopian concept album. The dark undercurrent that rippled through their earlier material has seeped cinematically into …Amorphous’s every pore, including the Matrix-meets-Covenant artwork. Spiral Into Existence is a bold opener, flexing polyrhythmic muscles with a hulk of a chorus, and the band start as they mean to go on. A brutal salvo follows with Deceptive Signal, Sins Of The Mechanical and Borderline Human, each precise and punishing with excellent choruses that rise from the twisted metal below, bathed in apocalyptic electronics. And while Meshuggah influences abound on tracks like Pinnacle Of The Strain, they feed rather than consume the music. Let’s hope album number three arrives soon.

The band are often considered a precursor to, or one of the earliest members of, the new wave of British heavy metal, which re-energised heavy metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s.Though several guitarists and drummers have played in Motrhead, most of their best-selling albums and singles feature the work of “Fast” Eddie Clarke on guitar and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor on drums.

Motrhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums, and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and particularly No Sleep ’til Hammersmith cemented Motrhead’s reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.

Description:

Hard-hitting heavy metal outfit Adrenaline Mob formed in 2011 around the talents of drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold), guitarists Mike Orlando (Sonic Stomp), and Rich Ward (Stuck Mojo), vocalist Russell Allen (Symphony X), and bassist Paul DiLeo. Employing a melodic, straightforward approach to the genre that has drawn comparisons to the likes of Black Label Society, Hellyeah, and Disturbed, Adrenaline Mob’s eponymous debut EP, which featured a cover of the Black Sabbath classic “Mob Rules,” was released in 2011. Their debut album, Omert, followed in 2012. The following year saw Portnoy exit the group, citing scheduling conflicts. He was quickly replaced by Twisted Sister’s A.J. Pero, who made his studio debut with the group on 2014’s Men of Honor. The band endured more lineup changes in the years to come, with the most dramatic one stemming from the untimely death of Pero, who passed away from a heart attack while on tour in 2015. Two years later the band released their third studio long player, We the People, with a lineup consisting of founding members Mike Orlando and Russell Allen, plus bassist David Zablidowsky and drummer Jordan Cannata. ~ James Christopher Monger

Description:

Jorn is the solo venture of journeyman Norwegian singer Jrn Lande (Masterplan, Vagabond, the Snakes, Ark, etc.), whose remarkable talent has allowed him to excel at everything from power metal to bluesy hard rock to pop. After fronting a number of metal and hard rock bands in the 1990s, he made his debut as Jorn with 2000’s Starfire, launching a prolific solo career that would see him release nearly a dozen albums over the coming decade. All the while, his collaborations with other acts continued, most notably as the singer for German power metal band Masterplan, with whom he recorded several well-received albums. Following the release of Jorn’s 2004 album Out to Every Nation, he formed the metal supergroup Allen/Lande with American vocalist Russell Allen (Symphony X) and Swedish guitarist Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Starbreaker). Throughout the rest of the 2000s, Lande would impressively juggle his work with both Masterplan and Allen/Lande while continuing to record his own solo albums for the Frontiers label. In addition to studio albums like Lonely Are the Brave (2008) and Spirit Black (2009), he released a handful of live recordings and and pair of greatest-hits collections. In 2010, he released the tribute album Dio, honoring the late metal icon Ronnie James Dio. Around the same time as his 2012 LP Bring Heavy Rock Back to the Land, it was announced Lande had left Masterplan, leaving him to focus mainly on his solo output and the next Allen/Lande album. An orchestral collection of his earlier solo material called Symphonic arrived in 2013, with his eighth studio album, Traveller, appearing that same year. Dracula: Swing of Death, a rock opera recorded with Norwegian guitarist Trond Holter, was released in 2015, followed a year later by a solo covers album called Heavy Rock Radio. ~ Timothy Monger & Eduardo Rivadavia
