Description:

Another dose of whirring rhythms and dark drones courtesy of Stefan Schneider and Sven Kacirek. This time around they have introduced the beguiling tones of Swedish singer Sofia Jernberg on three pieces, taking their music to a new level. The Dsseldorf / Hamburg duo Schneider Kacirek released their debut album some three years ago. A coarse energy ran through “Shadows Documents”, drawing on the pair of musicians’ various excursions to Kenya as producers. “Shadows Documents” was a somnambulistic interpretation of Kenyan music using drums and percussion (Kacirek) and analogue synthesizers (Schneider). No Samples. The two of them took their time working on the new album “Radius Walk”. Since their debut release, they have toured extensively with the likes of John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake). The experience of playing together in live situations has influenced how they interact as musicians, a process which has helped to shape the new record. The acoustics of Sven Kacirek’s studio were set up perfectly to capture the forceful sound of the drums and analogue synthesizers as they melt into a compact whole. The result is a sonically more concentrated and more transparent LP in comparison to its predecessor. Dark bass drones and whirring percussion sounds figure prominently in the music. A fascination with repetitive rhythm is the common thread which runs through the musical development of both musicians: listen to Stefan Schneider in his other projects, the bands Kreidler and To Rococo Rot and his albums with Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Further evidence can be heard on Kacirek’s solo albums, in particular on his much-lauded “Kenya Sessions”. By introducing the Swedish singer Sofia Jernberg, Schneider and Kacirek have added a new dimension to their music. They first met Jernberg in Berlin, where she performed with Kenyan singer Ogoya Nengo for whom Schneider and Kacirek had done production work in the past. As one of the most sought after vocalists on the improvised music circuit, Jernberg made an immediate impression on Schneider and Kacirek, who were quick to suggest that they work together. The splendid fruits of their labours can be savoured on three tracks on the album. “Dust”, “I Atlanten” and “Smiling” express both Jernberg’s love of Scandinavian folk music and her mastery of improvisation. Her voice neither dominates the songs in the manner of a singer songwriter, nor does it lean towards crossover experimentation. It feels more as if a brand new genre of music has been unlocked.

By day, former US representative Joe Scarborough hosts Morning Joe on MSNBC. By night, he makes indie rock music. (I don’t actually know the specifics of when Scarborough finds time to make indie rock music but bear with me.) His debut EP Mystified is out today, and last night Scarborough performed a show at the Cutting Room in NYC. According to a press release, it was a “packed house.”

Description:

Vancouver power-trash trio Needles//Pins began in 2009 as an excuse for three friends to hang out. Two LPs and a handful of 7 inch singles later, the band has come a long way but are still, at its core, a few friends having fun. 2017 sees the band set to release its third LP Good Night. The record is a progression both musically and lyrically from their older material while still maintaining the hook-centric philosophy of their previous releases. The band has become legendary in Vancouver for wild shows and gruff but catchy punk rock melodies. It draws from classic punk roots like the wiry pop of The Buzzcocks and the gravely anthems of Stiff Little Fingers, but has a unique West Coast approach that would align itself with the catchiest of the Lookout! or Dirtnap Records catalog. Though none of the band’s songs overstay their welcome, you’ll find yourself humming one of their hooks days after seeing them play or hearing the record. Recorded with Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung) in Vancouver at Rain City Recorders, the record shows an organic growth from the power pop of their previous two albums. Guitarist and singer Adam Solomonian’s voice is gruffer from playing hundreds of shows, and you can see a richer appreciation of the group’s influences such as Jawbreaker and the Replacements at play in the song writing. Tony Dubroy’s solid bass lines and Macey Budgell’s heavy drumming combine to form a powerful rhythm section that perfectly complement Solomonian’s simplistic-but-pointed guitar playing. Needles//Pins have heavy North American touring planned for the summer including performances at Sled Island, Ottawa Explosion and Pop Montreal.

Description:

On Mike Krol Is Never Dead: The First Two Records, we catch up—with the past, that is. Indeed, Turkey, released in 2015, is Chapter 3 of the Krol saga; here, finally, are its long-lost predecessors. Self-released in 2011, I Hate Jazz was the opening salvo of World War Krol. Only 500 copies were pressed; they were given away to anyone who showed interest (and many who showed none whatsoever). Including Krol classics like “Fifteen Minutes” and “Like a Star,” the record has long been unavailable. Trust Fund followed in 2013; its 500 copies sold out on the ensuing tour, fueling a mini-mania that would elevate it to cult status. This set includes both records on freshly pressed Merge vinyl; an illuminating selection of digital outtakes, demos, and B-sides; and a fold-out poster showcasing a selection of Mike Krol ephemera.

Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

Over the course of a decade and a half and four albums, Little Barrie have proven themselves to be masters of the power trio. They throw the blues, hard rock, psychedelia, and good-old album rock in a blender and end up with a brew that’s both familiar and sounds sparklingly new. Their fifth album, Death Express, is the first that Little Barrie produced themselves, and it’s their most immediate and atmospheric yet. Recording at their own pace in their practice space, the bandmembers were able to spend time honing their songs and sound to a fine point. When they emerged, it was with a batch of songs that bludgeon the listener with heavy riffs and thunderous drums, the moody tunes creeping in the shadows while sporting a menacing snarl. Guitarist Barrie Cadogan pulls out every trick he’s learned along the way, but never plays an excess note. Everything he does is in service to the song or the mood, not to show off his formidable skills. Drummer Virgil Howe and bassist Lewis Wharton are also unselfish sorts, and provide a rock-solid rhythm section that also has plenty of flash when called upon to step to the front. The album is long at 20 songs, but to the trio’s credit, the energy never flags. Like a mighty boulder gathering speed as it rolls down a mountain, the album alternates between window-rattling rockers (“You Won’t Stop Us” and the super hooky “Love or Love”), nasty laid-back workouts (“I.5.C.A.”), scathing prog funk jams (“Vulture Swarm”), and strutting songs that sound like blueprints for a (really good) Black Crowes comeback album (the title track and “Mind Mountain,” which is built out of their killer riff that serves as the theme to Better Call Saul). The trio never falters or hits a bum note throughout the album, and if — like in the past — the focus is more on atmosphere than songcraft, that’s OK, because the atmosphere they create is so thick and fuzzy, like a favorite old album from the early ’70s lovingly cleaned up but still a little scruffy. It’s hard to rate Little Barrie albums, since they are so close in sound and structure, but this might be their tightest, toughest, and most impressive work to date.

Description:

Since their first demo in 2013, the Austin expats in Institute have edged their raw anarcho punk blitz into something much more expansive and nuanced. 2014’s Salt EP marked the beginning of the band’s working relationship with Sacred Bones, and it explored longer, more experimental song forms. Catharsis, the band’s debut full-length, was another huge push forward, with a slightly cleaner production and some krautrock influence creeping in around the edges. Subordination sees them push themselves further out of genre, incorporating hard rock and glam and writing some of the most diverse material of their career.

Description:

Winnipeg rockers Mise En Scene are back with their sophomore full-length, Still Life on Fire. The title seems to convey the paradoxes this record is about: calm acceptance of how life is, but with an underlying burning, persistent passion.

After the pretty intro, in which lead singer Stefanie Blondal Johnson intones “I don’t wanna lie,” the ragged passion becomes apparent from her scream 13 seconds into “Closer.” While Johnson is capable of a husky snarl almost reminiscent of the Distillers’ Brody Dalle, she can also deliver soaring, clear melodies along the lines of Neko Case with just as much vigour.

Musically, this record delivers gritty guitars, punchy rhythms and catchy melodies (see the falsetto “ooh” parts on “Guts/Glory” and “Scout”). “I’m Ok” and “Still Life on Fire” offer some breathing room and lyrical vulnerability, as Johnson shares her search for purpose. “I’m Ok” starts with the lines “I don’t know where I’m gonna go from here / The constellations aren’t clear.”

The album ends on a bright point, with the chiming glockenspiel and ringing guitar chords of “Same Hearts” evoking stereotypical Springsteen, including the use of the title phrase as evocative chorus lyrics. While press materials mention Johnson’s residency at Banff Centre for the Arts and seem to partially attribute her subsequent writer’s block to being surrounded by classical musicians and sheet music, she turns this around at the end of the record, by including a lush, classically orchestrated outro that carries on the chords from “Same Hearts.”

Personal and artistic growth is evident here, but it seems like Mise En Scene have managed to stay true to themselves along the way. (Light Organ)
